What is aspect ratio?

An image's aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between its width and height, written as W:H. A 16:9 image is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall — a wide, horizontal rectangle. A 1:1 image is perfectly square.

Aspect ratio describes shape, not size. A 1920×1080px image and a 640×360px image both have a 16:9 aspect ratio — same shape, different sizes. Understanding this is key to optimizing images for web design.

Common aspect ratios explained

RatioCommon Uses
16:9YouTube thumbnails, Website banners, Modern TVs.
1:1Instagram feed posts, Profile pictures.
4:5Portrait photography, Instagram vertical posts.
9:16TikTok, Instagram Stories, Reels.
3:2Traditional 35mm film photography.

Aspect ratio guide by platform

Using the wrong ratio can lead to "black bars" or awkward automatic cropping. Here are the specs you need:

Instagram

  • Feed posts: 1:1 or 4:5 (Recommended for vertical space).
  • Stories & Reels: 9:16 (Must be vertical).

YouTube

  • Thumbnail: 16:9 (1280×720px).
  • Shorts: 9:16.

How to change aspect ratio

Changing ratio requires either cropping (cutting off the sides) or padding (adding bars). You cannot change a 4:3 photo to 16:9 by just dragging the corners — that would stretch the image.

For best results, use an image resizer tool that allows you to select a specific target ratio before exporting. If you need to hit a specific file size while doing this, use our Size Optimizer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will cropping ruin my photo quality?

Not if the original resolution is high enough. Cropping 10% of a 4K photo still leaves you with a very high-quality result.

What is the "Golden Ratio"?

The Golden Ratio is approximately 1.618:1. It is often used in art and design to create compositions that are naturally pleasing to the eye.
